Two Hands Worldshop launches website

November 13th, 2006

Lawrence based Two Hands Worldshop, a retail shop offering fair trade certified handbags, jewelry, home decor, toys and more has launched its website. You can find it at twohandsworldshop. Look for Two Hands Worldshop coming to downtown Lawrence summer 2007!

Two Hands Worldshop was founded by a couple in Lawrence, KS after they returned from working in the small country of Guyana in South America. Brady Swenson taught 7th and 8th grade English on Leguan Island in Guyana as a Peace Corps Volunteer between 2003 and 2005. Alicia Erickson developed an after-school art program for the students of Leguan.

In Guyana Brady and Alicia did their shopping in a traditional open-air marketplace where consumers and producers interacted face-to-face. This interaction drove home a simple fact that they had forgotten or perhaps simply hadn’t realized: trade is fundamentally a human interaction. We try to provide the faces and stories behind the beautiful arts and crafts we sell to help us remember the real power behind every dollar.

Two Hands Worldshop selects unique products of the highest quality craftsmanship that adhere to the Fair Trade criteria. Fair Trade means a fair wage, safe, cooperative workplaces, long-term business relationships and a chance to preserve cultural artforms. Fair Trade also helps disadvantaged producers by providing access to credit, banking, education and training, a necessity businesses in the developed world take for granted.

US Trade Strategy: Free vs. Fair

September 14th, 2006

A new publication from the Council on Foreign Relations examining the two prevailing routes the US may take on future trade policy. This is must reading for all of us.

Description: “This publication highlights the political importance of international trade to the US and details how trade issues have come to dominate the country’s political agenda. In the form of a memorandum to the president, the author suggests two distinct approaches that the US could take on trade policy. The first approach - “Free Trade” - argues that American prosperity and security are best served by aggressively seeking to lower trade barriers, even if it means that some industries lose out. The second approach - “Fair Trade” - contends that the economic benefits of freer trade are overstated and that the US government should slow or even halt efforts to lower trade barriers in order to promote goals such as community stability and income security. The recommended policy options in the publication are accompanied by four white papers that examine the major issues in the trade debate and explore the relevant challenges in additional detail.”
